Sons-in-law bathing in the village of Kosharitsa
The ritual bathing for good health`s sake performed on Yordanovden(6 January), continued on the next day too- Saint John`s Feast Day (Ivanovden). Bathing the newly-wed and the sons-in-law is an old Bulgarian tradition. Kosharitsa is the only village in the region and one of the few in Bulgaria where this ritual is still performed. On Saint John`s Feast Day, bachelors and carol singers “bathed” three sons-in-law: Plamen Panayotov, Krustan Nikiforov and Kaloyan Giurov. Before the ritual the young men gathered together to warm up with mulled wine and brandy. Then they were all delighted and in high spirits and enjoyed the folklore songs, performed by the musicians. As usual, the “bathing” was a real spectacle and everyone had fun.
