The “martenitsa” is made of red and white threads. It is tied round the wrist or pinned on
the lapel to assure good health and protection from the evil influence. It is also sent to close friends. It should be worn until the day one first sees a stork or a swallow.

Lazarovden is a Christian holiday celebrated on the 8th day before Easter. The girls called Lazarki pick off green willow twigs to make flower wreaths. On the next day which is Palm Sunday they put the wreaths on the front doors. It was believed that a girl who had never been a Lazarka could not get married.
